Tanjiro Kamado

The story's protagonist, a gentle, extraordinarily empathetic charcoal seller whose entire family is slaughtered by the demon Muzan Kibutsuji, leaving only his sister Nezuko alive -- transformed into a demon herself. Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps both to avenge his family and to find a cure to restore Nezuko's humanity, and his defining trait, an instinct to understand and even mourn the demons he's forced to kill, sets him apart from slayers driven purely by hatred.

Nezuko Kamado

Tanjiro's younger sister, the sole survivor of the demon attack on their family besides Tanjiro -- transformed into a demon herself but, uniquely, retaining enough of her humanity to resist devouring humans, kept in a bamboo muzzle and largely asleep in a box Tanjiro carries with him. Over the story she develops her own demon abilities in defense of her found family, and gaining back the ability to walk in sunlight becomes one of the series' key turning points in the search for a cure.

Zenitsu Agatsuma

A Demon Slayer trainee who is loudly, constantly terrified of everything and convinced he's about to die at every turn, yet possesses an extraordinary singular mastery of Thunder Breathing's first form, which he can only access by passing out from fear -- unlocking a completely different, fearless persona in unconscious combat. Beneath the cowardice is real loyalty; his devotion to Nezuko and his found family with Tanjiro and Inosuke becomes one of the story's most consistent sources of both comic relief and heart.

Inosuke Hashibira

A feral Demon Slayer trainee raised in the mountains by boars, who wears a boar's head as a mask and fights with a self-taught, unorthodox dual-blade style that intuitively bends the rules of formal Breathing techniques. Aggressive, boastful, and socially oblivious, Inosuke rounds out Tanjiro's trio with pure competitive ferocity, slowly softening (barely) into genuine loyalty to his friends over the course of the story.

Giyu Tomioka

The Water Hashira, a quiet, withdrawn swordsman who spares Tanjiro and Nezuko's lives at their first encounter and personally vouches for them to the Corps -- an act of mercy that sets the entire story in motion. Carrying deep guilt over his own sister's death and his former Water Breathing successor Sabito's sacrifice, Giyu's reserved exterior conceals real, if awkwardly expressed, compassion.

Kyojuro Rengoku

The Flame Hashira, a booming, wholeheartedly passionate swordsman who lives by his late father's original, un-corrupted teaching that the strong exist to protect the weak. Rengoku's single defining act -- holding the line alone against the demon Akaza aboard the Mugen Train to protect Tanjiro and the other passengers, ultimately dying with his convictions unshaken -- makes him the series' clearest embodiment of chosen honor over survival.

Shinobu Kocho

The Insect Hashira, a perpetually smiling swordsman whose delicate frame and gentle demeanor hide a will forged in grief -- unable to build the raw physical strength most Hashira rely on after her sister Kanae's death at a demon's hands, she instead developed a poison-based Insect Breathing style precise enough to kill demons without ever needing decapitation. Her calm exterior conceals a bottomless, carefully controlled hatred of demons that eventually drives her final, sacrificial gambit against Muzan's strongest servant.

Muzan Kibutsuji

The original and most powerful demon, whose transformation over a thousand years ago and subsequent blood created every other demon in existence. Obsessed with achieving true invincibility by eliminating his one weakness -- sunlight -- Muzan is patient, paranoid, and utterly ruthless, capable of instantly executing his own strongest servants for the smallest failure or hint of independence, and has evaded the Demon Slayer Corps for a millennium by living in disguised anonymity among humans.

Akaza

Upper Rank Three of the Twelve Kizuki, a master of a devastating hand-to-hand Blood Demon Art fighting style who genuinely respects strength above all else and repeatedly, almost sincerely, invites strong opponents to become demons and fight beside him forever. His duel with Rengoku aboard the Mugen Train -- fought with real mutual respect on both sides -- is one of the series' most emotionally layered fights, and his own tragic human backstory later recontextualizes his obsession with strength entirely.

The Mugen Train

A passenger train secretly infested by the demon Enmu, who lures dozens of Hashira-grade slayers and hundreds of civilians into shared sleep to devour their dreams and lives -- the setting of Tanjiro's team-up with Rengoku and their subsequent battle against Akaza. Its combination of ordinary modern setting (a moving train full of unsuspecting travelers) and supernatural horror is one of the story's most iconic sequences.

Butterfly Mansion

The Demon Slayer Corps' rehabilitation and training estate, run by Shinobu and her sister Kanao, where wounded slayers recover under the care of skilled nurses and trainees hone their skills between missions. It serves as Tanjiro's team's home base and recovery point between the story's escalating battles, and one of the few settings in the series defined by warmth and rest rather than danger.

The Demon Slayer Corps

A secret, government-unrecognized organization of swordsmen who have hunted demons for centuries, led in secret by the Ubuyashiki family and structured around a strict ranking system culminating in the Hashira, the nine strongest swordsmen in the Corps, each a master of their own Breathing Style. Recruits must pass a brutal Final Selection -- surviving alone in a mountain overrun with demons -- before becoming full Demon Slayers, reflecting the Corps' core belief that only overwhelming personal strength and sacrifice can hold the line against Muzan's forces.

The Twelve Kizuki

Muzan Kibutsuji's twelve most powerful demons, ranked from Lower Six to Upper One based on how much of Muzan's blood they've been given and how much power and humanity they've sacrificed for it. Each Kizuki commands a unique Blood Demon Art and often oversees their own subordinate demons; membership is unstable, as Muzan mercilessly kills and replaces members who fail him or grow too independent, keeping even his strongest servants in a state of constant, terrified obedience.

Nichirin Blade

The signature weapon of every Demon Slayer: a sword forged from ore that absorbs and stores sunlight, changing color permanently to reflect its wielder's nature the first time it's drawn (Tanjiro's turns black -- an ominous, rare color said to bring bad luck to its bearer). Nichirin blades are the only weapons capable of reliably beheading a demon, making swordsmithing villages and the blacksmiths who forge them essential, closely guarded assets of the Corps.

World Overview

Set in early 20th-century Taisho-era Japan, a country modernizing on the surface while demons -- once-human beings transformed by the blood of the demon Muzan Kibutsuji -- hunt humans in secret from the shadows every night. Demons possess supernatural strength, regeneration, and unique blood-demon-art abilities, but are destroyed by sunlight, making dusk-to-dawn the human world's most dangerous hours. Opposing them is the Demon Slayer Corps, a centuries-old organization unrecognized by the government, whose swordsmen train relentlessly to master 'Breathing Styles' derived from a mythic original technique in order to behead demons -- the only reliable way to kill one.

Demons

Demons are humans transformed by Muzan Kibutsuji's blood, gaining immense strength, rapid regeneration, and a unique supernatural ability called a Blood Demon Art, at the cost of an insatiable hunger for human flesh and near-total loss of their former humanity (though flashes of it can resurface). Higher-ranked demons who drink more of Muzan's blood grow exponentially more powerful and human-passing, forming the numbered Twelve Kizuki -- Muzan's elite inner circle. All demons share two absolute weaknesses: direct sunlight, which disintegrates them, and decapitation by a blade forged with a rare ore that lets it cut through their otherwise near-invulnerable flesh (or, more specifically, wielded with Sun Breathing or the Nichirin blades that mimic its properties).

Breathing Styles & Nichirin Blades

Demon Slayers fight using 'Breathing Styles' -- sword techniques built on a specialized total-body breathing technique that grants superhuman speed, strength, and stamina, each style modeled on an element or natural phenomenon (Water, Flame, Wind, Stone, Sound, Insect, Love, Serpent, Mist, and more). All known Breathing Styles are said to descend from a single original technique, Sun Breathing, wielded a thousand years ago by the legendary swordsman who first fought Muzan and nearly killed him. Slayers wield Nichirin blades, swords forged from ore that absorbs sunlight and change color based on their wielder's nature -- the only weapons reliably capable of beheading a demon.

The Hashira

Not a separate species but the Corps' highest formal rank: the nine strongest Demon Slayers alive at any time, each having mastered their own Breathing Style to a level capable of fighting the Twelve Kizuki on roughly even terms. Hashira posts are named for their style (Water, Flame, Insect, Sound, Wind, Stone, Love, Serpent, Mist), and losing even one is treated as a serious blow to humanity's ability to hold the line against Muzan.
